A number of intercepted letters clearly show the sympathy which is still felt by certain suppliers in Lanchester, bradford and elsewhere for their German correspondents in the Fast. These letters are not only from firms of German origin and with German names, but have also come from well known british firms.
"he following extract from a letter dated Manchester 17th liovember, 1914, written by a leading British exporter addressed to the liquidators of Siemssen & Co. is a sample of some of this correspondence.
"We trust the bill will be taken up exactly as "if Messrs. Siemssen Co. were still working the "business, and it would be a source of satisfaction
"to us to hear that the british Authorities had
"decided to withdraw the order of liquidation and
"permit our friends to continue their business in

The only hope we can have of, in part at all events,
recovering the enormous losses entailed by the far forced
upon us by Germany is by seizing her Colonies and securing
as much as possible of her overseas trade, but our efforts
in the second direction will be largely counteracted if
British subjects both here and at home for the sake of
temporary gain, lend themselves to keeping alive German
interests during the continuance of the war.
As regards the liquidation of the local German firms, stocks of piece goods, etc., still on hand in the Colony are estimated at between four and five million dollars. These are fairly evenly divided between about eight firms. The goods are largely drawn against, the
